Dear friends,

Currently I am using VFP6 with SQL server and Access databases. We are
planing to upgrade to latest version. I found versions 8 and 9 are
available.

Can you experts help to decide on what version should I choose.

Any compatibility issues or version upgrade issues?

Thanks in advance

Wilson

Version 9 is currently in beta, but expected to be released next month.
December 15 has appeared on a couple of web sites as the official RTM date.
Compatability issues really depend on what the code does. There have been
some things that have changed, but for the most part, you code should run.

Wilson,
I'd recommend VFP 9.0 - partly because it seems to be more stable AND all the new features that are included. However, 9.0 probably won't be released till later this year (or next month today or later this month tomorrow! <g>).

You may run into "compatibility" problems in either 8.0 or 9.0, but these are fairly easy to discover and fix.

Note: Since 9.0 has a number of new field types and functions just to be more compatible with SQL server, et al, this may be the most important reason for going with 9.0.

Hi Wilson,

Just to add, the VFP9 public Beta is downloadable from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro. It's several months old, but it should
give you an idea of how your code will behave with the new version. You can
install VFP9 on the same computer as VFP6 without problems, but you should
work with a copy of your actual code, just to be safe.

To see what's new in VFP7 and VFP8 you can read "What's New in Visual FoxPro
7.0" (http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/newin7.htm) and "What's New in
Visual FoxPro 8.0" (http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/wnvfp8.htm). There
will be a "New in 9" book published shortly and you can read some preview
chapters at http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/wnvfp9.htm.
